New York CDL: Complete 2026 Application Guide

Getting your CDL in New York State means following the NY DMV's specific requirements from start to finish. 01 CDL Application Process

🩺 Medical Certificate Requirements

New York State requires all CDL holders to submit a USDOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5876).

Unless you qualify as an Excepted driver, you must renew your medical certificate every two years. Failing to renew on time will result in your CDL being automatically downgraded to a standard Class D license.

ELDT Training Requirements

Under federal law, NY DMV only accepts training completion records from schools listed in FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

If you're a first-time Class A or Class B applicant, or if you're adding an endorsement (P, S, or H), you must complete ELDT before you can take your road test. NY DMV examiners will check your training record directly in the system — if your completion data hasn't been submitted by your training provider, the examiner will turn you away.
