About the CDL Combination Vehicles Test
The CDL Combination Vehicles endorsement is required to operate semi-trucks, double trailers, and other combination vehicles. The written test is based on FMCSA's Commercial Driver's License Standards (49 CFR Part 383), Chapter 6, and focuses on six core topic areas:
- Coupling & Uncoupling: Step-by-step procedures for properly connecting and disconnecting the fifth wheel and trailer
- Trailer Swing: Causes of trailer jackknife and swing during sharp turns or hard braking, and how to prevent them
- Brake Systems: Air brake coordination, brake lag, and how the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) works on combination vehicles
- Load Distribution: How cargo weight and center of gravity affect stability, plus axle weight compliance
- Rollover Prevention: Identifying risks from speeding through curves and cargo shift that can cause a rollover
- Pre-Trip Inspection: Safety inspection items specific to combination vehicles
This 20-question practice test is weighted to reflect the real exam's topic distribution. Every question includes a detailed explanation and the corresponding CDL manual section, making it ideal for first-time applicants and those studying for a retake.
